Lotus Review: The Compact Shuffler That Upgraded Our Game Nights

“Who shuffled these cards?” This familiar refrain gets blurted out every time a player receives a bad hand of cards from the dealer. Have you ever wanted to shift the blame off of your shuffling skills and ensure a better shuffle? Does shuffling your large card decks become a chore that takes away the fun of game night?

Enter the Lotus card shuffler. This compact device combines quiet elegance with simple functionality that takes away all of the frustrations of shuffling. It is designed to do one thing, and one thing only, without any extra fluff: shuffle your decks easily and efficiently.

Small Device, Smart Shuffling

When we were approached about the Lotus V2, we jumped on the opportunity to review it, even though we already own a card shuffler. Putting it to the test during our game night proved that it’s a great little device that does exactly what it promises to do. So, what is so compelling about it?

For starters, it is so compact that it can easily fit into a small drawer with our card games and accessories. Our other shuffler is about three times as wide and much harder to store or carry with us. How does the Lotus achieve this compact design? Instead of combining two halves of a deck into one, it actually takes a main deck and splits it into two. It’s kind of ingenious, actually. Drop in your deck (or multiple decks), tap the sensor, and the cards get randomly spit out in two directions. Then combine them and shuffle again a few more times, and you’re good to go. Close up the device when you’re done, then set it aside or store it away for your next game night.

Second, it tackles a variety of card and deck sizes without getting jammed. Our other shuffler uses a hand crank mechanism that combines the cards from the left and right trays into a central tray. The problem that I continually face with that one is that it’s easy to overload too many cards, causing them all to get stuck when the central deck gets too high. This is not a problem with the Lotus. It can handle two decks at once with ease, and the splitting mechanism prevents cards from colliding together. Just make sure not to overload it higher than the central tray allows, and you’re golden.

The Lotus is designed to be the perfect size for standard playing cards, but the wheel mechanisms are large enough to support some variation in card sizes without any trouble. I was even able to shuffle small half-sized cards by placing them across the width of the tray. I was surprised that it worked. Just don’t count on any oversized cards fitting in the Lotus — you’ll have to continue to shuffle those by hand. Not really any surprises here.

The Lotus V2 is powered by a single 9-volt battery. In a world full of rechargeable devices, I was a little surprised by this. The good news is that if you have smoke detectors at home, you likely have some of these batteries lying around. Also, you don’t have to wait for the device to recharge — just pop in a new battery when you need it and put it to good use instead of making your friends wait for the next deal. I can’t speak yet to how long the battery will last, but I’m hopeful that it will not have to be replaced often under normal use.

Final Word

The Lotus V2 is an elegant and extremely useful accessory for anyone who plays card games often. It is bound to impress your friends and turn the tedious task of shuffling stacks of standard-sized cards into a breeze. This functionality and convenience naturally come with a higher price tag than those cheap shufflers, so you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to you. For us, I know we will be putting it to good use as we say ‘good riddance’ to our old bargain shuffler.
